Cover-ups are priced like any custom tattoo, from ₹1,500 depending on size and detail.

Cover-up or retouch: which do you need?
- Cover-up: a new design is tattooed over the old one so it can no longer be seen. Best for names, designs you’ve outgrown, or work you’re unhappy with.
- Retouch / rework: we refresh faded ink with sharper lines and brighter shades while keeping your original design.
- Blast-over: a bold new piece goes over the old one, with some of the old ink still showing on purpose.
How we plan a cover-up
- Send a clear photo of the old tattoo on WhatsApp, taken in daylight.
- We check how dark the old ink is, its size and placement, and whether it has blurred.
- We design a new piece that is usually larger and darker in the right places, using shading, texture and colour to hide the old lines.
- We tell you if a light laser session first would give a better result. Some very dark or very large tattoos can’t be fully hidden without fading them first. We don’t offer laser ourselves, but we’ll explain the option. Read cover-up vs laser removal.
Designs that cover well
Flowers, mandalas, animals, Japanese and Maori designs, and blackwork work especially well because they have natural areas of dark shading and texture. Your artist will suggest options that suit both the old tattoo and your style. See our custom tattoo page for the styles we work in.

Can any tattoo be covered up?
Most tattoos can, but very dark, large or heavily blurred ones may need a few laser sessions to lighten them first. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly.
Does a cover-up have to be bigger than the old tattoo?
Usually yes. The new design needs to be somewhat larger and darker than the old one so the old lines can be hidden.
How much does a tattoo cover-up cost in Chennai?
Cover-ups at Laughing Budda Tattoos start at ₹1,500. The price depends on size, complexity and detail, and we give you an estimate after seeing a photo.
Can you cover a name tattoo?
Yes. Name tattoos are one of the most common cover-ups we do. A floral, mandala or symbolic design usually works well.
Is a cover-up more painful than a normal tattoo?
It feels much the same as a normal tattoo. Sessions can take longer because the work is denser.
