How to Heal a New Tattoo in Chennai’s Heat and Humidity

In Chennai’s heat and humidity, a new tattoo heals best when you keep it clean, keep it covered at first, moisturise lightly, and keep it out of sweat, sun and water. Here is how we advise clients at Laughing Budda Tattoos in Palavakkam, ECR. Always follow the specific instructions your artist gives you.

Days 1–3: protected healing with derma wrap

At our studio we cover new tattoos with derma wrap, a breathable, clear film that seals the tattoo while it starts to heal. It keeps out dust, pollution and bacteria, which matters on Chennai’s roads. Leave it on for as long as your artist tells you. Some fluid and ink under the film in the first day is normal.

After you remove the wrap

  • Wash gently with clean, lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap, using clean hands only.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don’t rub.
  • Apply a very thin layer of the aftercare cream your artist recommends. In humid weather, less is more, because thick layers trap moisture.
  • Repeat 2–3 times a day.

Chennai-specific tips

  • Sweat: rinse gently after sweating and avoid the gym and heavy workouts for the first couple of weeks.
  • Sun: keep the tattoo covered with loose cotton clothing. Once it has fully healed, use sunscreen to stop it fading.
  • Sea and pools: no swimming in the sea, pools or lakes until it has healed. That includes Besant Nagar and ECR beaches.
  • Clothing: wear loose, breathable cotton over the tattoo. Tight synthetic fabric rubs and traps heat.
  • Monsoon: keep the tattoo dry in the rain and change out of wet clothes quickly.
  • AC and fans: very dry air can make it itchy. A light layer of moisturiser helps.

What’s normal and what isn’t

Mild redness, tenderness, itching and light peeling in the first one to two weeks are normal. Don’t scratch or pick the flakes. See a doctor if redness spreads, the area gets hotter or more swollen after the first few days, there’s pus or a bad smell, or you get a fever. Message us on WhatsApp too, and we’ll help.

How long does healing take?

The surface usually settles within two to three weeks, but the skin underneath keeps healing for longer. Wait until it is fully healed before swimming, long sun exposure or a touch-up.
